Wyatt Earp (Joel McCrea), a businessman and former bison hunter, comes to Wichita, Kansas, a wild town full of cattle. He would be a great marshal because of how good he is at gunfighting, but he refuses the job until he feels morally forced to bring order to this crazy town. He doesn't like it when people in town, no matter how important, take away their guns. It's not until town banker Sam McCoy (Walter Coy) goes through a terrible event that Earp's order to not carry guns starts to make sense.
